Exercise is one of the best things that you can do for your physical, mental, and emotional health.
But, in reality most of us are managing busy schedules. Despite how easy it is to throw a pair of runners on, hit the bike paths, find that 10 minute you tube video sometimes it is just hard to fit it in.
Whether a busy work day, life commitments or social engagements are to blame or simply your body and mood isn’t into it. We shouldn’t be beating ourselves up over a missed workout.
Our drive to maintain fitness can quickly go from a positive to a negative when we place stress and pressure on ourselves to maintain an unmanageable or even inflexible training schedule. We do need to remember there is a fine line between healthy exercise and over exercising, which can lead to injury and burnout.
While it’s important to maintain consistency with training it is okay to miss a workout.
Below are some reminders to think of when workouts are missed.
- Your muscles need rest. Time to repair, strengthen, and grow.
- The stress of a missed workout isn’t healthy. Remember your why’s… we work out for a healthier lifestyle.
- You risk taking the fun away from working out. If you aren’t enjoying what you do, it will be less effective and you will be far less likely to stick to it.
There is no such thing as a “missed” workout, only a workout that didn’t happen because life gets in the way. You don’t need more pressure in your life.
If the body says no consider reading a book, a walk, baking or simply an early night. There are other ways of staying healthy that doesn’t mean only counting hours exercising.
Life happens, sometimes things get in the way—and they will again and again. Allow yourself to let go of any guilt, stay positive and refocus your mental energy on getting back to your next training session.
Tomorrow is another day, balance is the key to successful movement forward in fitness.
